UNSEAM is an initiative founded by Bas Froon and Karin Vlug that develops new technologies enabling local clothing production in the Netherlands.
The clothing we wear is produced at the other side of the world with the sewing machine and is one of the most labor-intensive industries in the world. In 2018, UNSEAM developed a seamless, three-dimensional shaping textile technology for the fashion industry, making labor-intensive operations unnecessary.
By combining new and existing digital techniques, UNSEAM aims to enable users and designers to produce their clothes made to measure and on-demand in their own city. Sustainable, ethical and affordable.
Our collaboration is special – industrial designer Bas comes ‘from outside’ the fashion industry and has a passion for industrial and traditional production techniques. Fashion researcher Karin can analyze a complex problem at high level and come up with unconventional solutions. Together they ‘steal’ industrial techniques in an unorthodox manner in order to develop ‘hands-on’ new techniques in which science, industry and fashion are merged.
